The Woodland Park Boys and Girls Club opened the New Year by celebrating January as National Mentoring Month. Each year since 2002, President George W. Bush has endorsed the campaign by proclaiming January as National Mentoring Month. This year President Barack Obama endorsed January 2011, as it will mark the 10th anniversary of the campaign. Spearheaded by the Harvard Mentoring Project of the Harvard School of Public Health, MENTOR, and the Corporation for National and Community Service, this year’s campaign focuses on mentoring as a strategy for boosting academic achievement. The campaign’s tagline is “Help Them Get There. Become a Mentor.” This year, at Woodland Park, the measure began as the staff members mentored teen members in preparation of becoming teen mentors themselves. The teen members co-facilitated the daily activities once a week with their staff mentors during the month of January. Additionally, the latter parts of the day were reserved for the teens to work in small groups with the younger members in goal setting and positive behavior techniques to aide in academic enrichment. The measure can be attributed to the considerable gains in positive behavior modification and a greater sense of intrinsic value associated in academic achievement with the teens and younger members alike. The teens are now stakeholders in the younger member’s futures.
The Woodland Park Boys and Girls Club would also like to congratulate Charles Jones ( better known as C. J.), one of its fifth grade members, in winning first place in the Alachua County MLK Spelling Bee. C.J. worked diligently at the Boys and Girls Club daily in preparing for the competition. His eagerness and drive in learning to spell the words correctly also transcended into implementing the Civil Rights oriented words into his everyday word usage. His ability to conceptualize the words aided in his successful spelling.Although he is only in the fifth grade, C.J. can readily spell words such as Antidisestablishmentarianism and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
